Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company and Museum

The Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad Company & Museum focuses on the preservation of Maine's 2 footgauge railways for the enjoyment and education of its visitors. The organization runs a 1.5 mile scenic railroad along the Casco Bay waterfront and operates a variety of restored coaches and trains for passenger services. The museum is open from May to October for tours and seasonally for private events.

Drive the dDiesel Locomotive

Experience an interaction with history when you spend time at the helm of a 23 ton diesel locomotive. For a fee of $75.00, you are guaranteed to have the throttle of this 1949 machine for at least 45 minutes. To make your reservation, go to http://www.mainenarrowgauge.org/dieselengineer/

Convenient Parking

Parking is available at the museum, but spaces are limited so get there early. If the lot is full, there is metered parking on the street and Ocean Gateway Parking Garages at 167 Fore St. is available.


  • What type of scenery will I see on the train ride?

    Chug along Portland’s scenic waterfront in the antique locomotive and enjoy amazing Casco Bay views. Some of the sights you can expect to see include Fort Preble, Fort Williams & Portland Head Light, House Island & Fort Scammel, Portland Breakwater Light, and South Portland Shipyard.
  • Is there a fee for the museum?

    There is a nominal fee for entry to the museum. Adults - $3, Seniors - $2, Children (3-12) - $2, Children under 3, Free.
